Don’t Ruin Your Relationships

Don't Ruin Your Relationships

Pastor Tyrone E Barnette  | August 27, 2023

This year's relationship series "The Flex Factor" explores how to create healthy boundaries in your relationships that don't cause you to break.

  • Sermon Notes

“The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. 7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. 8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.” 11 “Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” 13 Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.” Genesis 3:6-13 (NLT)

“Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. 15 These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.: James 1:14-15 (NLT)

Sin produces Fear and makes us DISTANT.

“God called to Adam, ‘Why are you hiding?’ Adam said, ‘I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid’”.  Genesis 3:9-10

“… they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness” vs 7a

“So, they sewed fig leaves to cover up themselves” vs 7b

“Then they hid from God among the trees” vs 8

Sin produces Fear and makes us DEFENSIVE.

“God asked, ‘Did you eat what I told you not to eat?’ Adam answered, ‘YOU gave me this woman and SHE gave me the fruit’”  vs 12

“Then Eve said, ‘The SERPENT deceived me and I ate” vs 13

Sin produces Fear and makes us DEMANDING.

“And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you”  vs 16 (NLT)

The Remedy:  Run to God Don’t Hide From God

    Job 11:13-19

“If only you would prepare your heart

and lift up your hands to him in prayer!

14 Get rid of your sins,

and leave all iniquity behind you.

15 Then your face will brighten with innocence.

You will be strong and free of fear.

    16 You will forget your misery;

it will be like water flowing away.

17 Your life will be brighter than the noonday.

Even darkness will be as bright as morning.

18 Having hope will give you courage.

You will be protected and will rest in safety.

19 You will lie down unafraid,

and many will look to you for help”.
